DSP wage bill passes Senate with veto-proof vote

Just one week after an energetic lobby day in Springfield, the Illinois State Senate passed SB 3508 by a veto-proof vote of 40 yes votes to 9 no votes. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Heather Steans, provides fair wages to direct service personnel (DSPs) in state-funded disability agencies.

In a big shift from last year, eight Republican senators voted Yes. This show of support for fair pay for dedicated DSPs across Illinois is a direct result of AFSCME members’ hard work and determination—and that of our entire coalition of agencies and families. We are one step closer to our goal of $15 an hour and a stable, high-quality workforce to care for people with disabilities.

The bill now moves to the House, sponsored by Representative Robyn Gabel.

TAKE ACTION!

Take a few minutes to contact your state representative using the DSP hotline: 844-259-0916. Urge them to vote YES for SB 3508. Get the word out to co-workers, family and friends to do the same.
