College of DuPage staff launches union campaign with AFSCME

Seeking fair compensation and a stronger voice on the job, some 600 employees of the College of DuPage (COD) announced on April 23 that they are forming their union with AFSCME Council 31.
When certified, the new union—College of DuPage Staff United/AFSCME—will represent administrative, clerical, IT and similar employees whose work supports COD students and faculty.
The announcement came in a public letter signed by 95 COD employees who are part of the union organizing committee and sent to their co-workers.
“We are forming our union because we are proud of the work we do to see our students and community thrive,” the letter states. “It’s time for staff to have our own voice.”
When their union is certified, COD employees will join thousands of other AFSCME members who work on college campuses throughout Illinois. About 50 College of DuPage custodial workers are already represented by AFSCME.
