Illinois State University employees are ready to strike!

Fed up with the administration’s refusal to agree to fair wages, members of AFSCME Local 1110 have voted to authorize a strike. 

On March 26, the union delivered a 10-day notice of their intent to strike to ISU President Tarhule. Workers could walk off the job any time on or after April 8. 

If a strike is called, the essential work performed by these employees such as the cleaning of buildings, preparation of food in campus cafeterias, and groundskeeping, will grind to a halt.

“We will not accept the poverty wages this administration is offering us,” said AFSCME Local 1110 President Chuck Carver. “We are united in our determination to win a fair contract, and we won’t back down until President Tarhule’s team comes to the table and treats us with the respect we deserve.”

“President Tarhule makes $450,000 a year, but he’s telling us we need to get by on less than $20 an hour,” said AFSCME Local 1110 Secretary Tia Reese. “Half of us don’t earn a living wage for a single person, not to mention a wage that we can support a family on. Respecting employees for the services they provide means paying us fairly.”
