Fed up with the administration’s refusal to agree to fair wages, on April 8 members of AFSCME Local 1110 walked off the job on strike.

On March 26, the union delivered a 10-day notice of their intent to strike to ISU President Tarhule. Workers could walk off the job any time on or after April 8.

The essential work performed by these employees such as the cleaning of buildings, preparation of food in campus cafeterias, and groundskeeping, has ground to a halt.

“We will not accept the poverty wages this administration is offering us,” said AFSCME Local 1110 President Chuck Carver. “We are united in our determination to win a fair contract, and we won’t back down until President Tarhule’s team comes to the table and treats us with the respect we deserve.”

“President Tarhule makes $450,000 a year, but he’s telling us we need to get by on less than $20 an hour,” said AFSCME Local 1110 Secretary Tia Reese. “Half of us don’t earn a living wage for a single person, not to mention a wage that we can support a family on. Respecting employees for the services they provide means paying us fairly.”
